The fellowship will be awarded for research to be conducted as part of an NIH-funded project on Plasmodium haem detoxification probes. The research activities will include in vitro culturing of Plasmodium falciparum , cell fractionation of P. falciparum trophozoites to separate undigested haemoglobin, exchangeable or free haem and haemozoin. Haem will be measured in these fractions using a pyridine-based assay. Flow cytometry will be used for cell counting. The technique will be applied to a range of experimental compounds believed to inhibit haemozoin and effects of haem and other porphyrins on trophozoites will also be investigated.
